General Motors (NYSE:GM) Onstar

By Amy Gilroy

General Motors’ (NYSE:GM) OnStar is improving its voice recognition by adding natural speech recognition in 2011 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac models.

Users can now give conversational commands like, “I need to make a phone call,” instead of going through a prompt and using formal commands like, “dial” or “call.”

Users can also connect to an OnStar Virtual Advisor through natural phrases including, “get traffic info,” to receive text-to-speech directions.

Nuance Communications (NASDAQ:NUAN) is providing the new speech software. It’s also collaborating with OnStar to develop uNav, a new self-service feature that allows subscribers to quickly receive directions to a destination using an automated voice system after pressing the blue OnStar button.
