The Atrix 4G, a phone with 2GHz of desktop-like processing, will go on pre-sale on February 13th and will be available March 6th at select retailers and AT&T (NYSE:T) at $199.99 with contract.
AT&T is making the Atrix its “leading device,” it told the Wall Street Journal, although it would not state how much it plans to spend on promoting it.
The Motorola (NYSE:MMI-WI) phone is also the first with a qHD display and is unusual because it can dock with a laptop to become the processor for the device. (See video) You can buy the Motorola laptop (a “dead” device without the Atrix) in a bundle with the Atrix for $499.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate.
The Atrix runs Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android 2.2, uses a Tegra 2 processor at 1GHz for each core and supports Flash. It has a built in hotspot and can work with an AT&T U-verse app to downlaod and watch TV shows and manage DVR recordings from the phone.
You get 4G HSPA+, HDMI, front and rear facing cameras with the ability to record in HD, and up to 50 percent faster WiFi than most phones as it supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi 802.11n. The device, which won a CNET Best of CES 2011 award, is designed to act as a digital hub.
When docked in the laptop, the Atrix’s webtop app delivers full Firefox browsing, file access, Flash and lets you place and receive phone calls. The Motorola Laptop Dock gives you an 11.6 inch screen, full keyboard, and stereo speakers plus an 8-hour battery. Weight is 2.4 pounds. There’s also a PC dock and a car dock for the Atrix.
