Garmin (NASDAQ:GRMN) has signed an agreement to buy Tri-Tronics, a leading manufacturer of electronic dog training equipment. The acquisition will allow Garmin to expand its role in pet tracking and training.
Garmin is already in the pet GPS market. In 2007 it introduced the Astro GPS dog tracking system, which pinpoints the exact location of a dog for hunters. Earlier this year, it introduced the cellular-based GTU 10 GPS locator and web-based Garmin Tracker service for computers and smartphones.
Tri-Tronics, based in Tucson, AZ, has been making e-collars and other electronics for more than 40 years. It will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Garmin and will continue to operate in Tucson, led by its current management. The deal is expected to close by the end of the month. No financial terms were released.
