Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry PlayBook tabletWe keep following Research in Motion’s (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry PlayBook tablet sales, because we have a hunch the PlayBook will make its way into the car, that is, if the product manages to catch on with consumers after early poor reviews.

It looks sales are slowly chugging away, reaching 250,000 units in one month, said an analyst at RBC Capital Markets.

This would give the PlayBook a respectable edge over the Motorola (NYSE:MMI) Xoom, which required 2 months to hit the quarter million mark.  Read More

Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry PlayBook tabletBy Amy Gilroy

The Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry PlayBook beat sales expectations at Best Buy (NYSE:BBY), claimed the retailer about over a week after the tablet went on sale.

“Best Buy has had great success selling BlackBerry smartphones in North America, so our sales expectations for the BlackBerry PlayBook were very high,” the retailer said Thursday. “To date, we have far exceeded those expectations and we’re finding that customers are even more interested in purchasing once they’ve tested the PlayBook in the store,” said Best Buy.

The 7-inch PlayBook began selling on April 19, but it met disfavor with many reviewers who complained it lacked a built-in email client (it relies on a tether to your BlackBerry phone for email). Some also said the software was buggy.

Still, the device sold about 50,000 units on day one, estimates RBC Capital Markets, possibly more than the Motorola’s (NYSE:MMI) Xoom or Galaxy Tab in early sales, notes PC World. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) sold 4.69 million iPads in the recent quarter.  Read More

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad 2By Amy Gilroy

Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad 2, which becomes available today, may see sales reach 600,000 units at launch, surpassing the original iPad, which sold 300,000 units in its first 24 hours, said analysts.

Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies and Brian Marshall of Gleacher & Co, are both expecting 500,000 in iPad 2 sales, said Bloomberg.

The newest iPad has an advantage at retail as it will be launched in Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and AT&T (NYSE:T) outlets, as well as Best Buy (NYSE:BBY), Walmart (NYSE:WMT) and Target (NYSE:TGT) stores plus some smaller Apple resellers totalling over 10,000 outlets. Last year the iPad was only offered in Apple Stores and Best Buy, or a total of about 1,100 stores. Read More

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Tablet Could Challenge Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad 2Forrester boldly asserts that the expected rash of new tablets won’t really challenge Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad. The BlackBerry (Research in Motion, NASDAQ:RIMM) PlayBook expected soon, the HP TouchPad, and even new Honeycomb (Google, NASDAQ:GOOG) tablets from Motorola (NYSE:MMI) and others are too expensive to threaten the iPad and they lack an elegant App Store.

Apple will keep at least 80 percent of the U.S. tablet market in 2011. Just look at what happens at retail. “Compare the experience of walking into an Apple Store, where the iPad is front and center, to walking into a Verizon (NYSE:VZ) store where the Samsung (SSNHY, 005930.SE) Galaxy Tab is collecting dust at the back of the store and the sales reps don’t quite know what to make of it. Or walking into a Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) store, whose shelves will soon be lined with similar-looking tablets with similar functionality,” said a blog by Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps.

Also, the carrier subsidies that Motorola, Samsung, Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) and others rely on to lower the tablet price won’t work. Consumers are tired of being locked in to one carrier. “Forrester’s data shows that consumers want flexibility with their mobile broadband contracts on tablets.” Read More

Motorola (NYSE: MMI-WI) XOOM tablet

By Amy Gilroy

Motorola’s (NYSE:MMI) Xoom tablet, which is officially available Thursday, gives us the first glimpse of Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android Honeycomb OS designed for tablets and reviewers say it’s a big improvement over earlier versions of Android. The Xoom is also fast and zippy but it’s quirky in some areas, leading some to conclude the product was rushed to market.

Then again the Xoom will be updated in Q2 so buyers can rest easier. Read More
